Harvest 2025: A Dream Year in the Vines

There’s a unique energy in the vineyard as harvest draws near. The rows are heavy with fruit, the air alive with anticipation and the team poised for the most important weeks of the year. Every season tells a different story, and 2025 is shaping up to be one we’ll remember – a vintage year of consistent sunshine, cooler nights and well-timed September rainfall.

Early Promise in the Vines

The vines have had a near-perfect run this year.

From the very first buds bursting in spring, Sussex has given us warmth and light, laying the groundwork for a harvest that’s early and full of potential.

“In short, it’s been a dream year,” says Vineyard Manager Matt Strugnell.

“From spring bud burst up to fruit setting, the weather couldn’t have been much better; plenty of warmth and sunshine and the vines love it.

Flowering was early, mid-June, about a week ahead of the long-term average. This sets us up for an early harvest, probably late September.

It’s not a huge crop but shaping up to be a well-developed one.”

What a Difference A Year Makes

The contrast with 2024 couldn’t be more striking. Last year’s relentless rain knocked yields and dampened spirits. But now, the vines are flourishing and even recent showers have been a welcome bonus.

A little rain before harvest can help berries plump up and become juicier, without diluting flavour, if it arrives at just the right time.

This season, pockets of timely rainfall have eased the dryness, allowing fruit to swell gently and develop beautifully. With cool nights holding onto freshness, the berries are tasting well – a promising sign that great wine is on its way.

A Taste of What's to Come

Harvest isn’t just about picking fruit. It’s where every bottle’s journey begins and this vintage has some serious winemaking potential.

“Phenolic and sugar ripeness should be excellent, so I would be expecting some very flavoursome juice to come out of the presses,” says Matt.

“This could be another season that raises the bar. Each year our knowledge grows, our skills improve, and we make better wine.”

With harvest just around the corner, there’s a buzz across the estate. It’s Ridgeview’s most joyful time of year – a reminder that every celebration in a glass starts here, in these vines.
